Formed by Frode Strømstad in 2005, with its debut album released in 2007, and Anne Lise Frøkedal joining the same year, I Was A King continued at a steady pace for the next seven years, appearing on almost as many record labels throughout.
Through the years they have have worked with a wide range of other musicians, collaborators and friends including Sufjan Stevens, Gary Olson (The Ladybug Transistor), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Robyn Hitchcock, Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and many others.
They have toured several times in the US and all over Europe, received grammy nominations in Norway.
I Was a King is currently working on a new record wich will come out in October 2025.
